Product Description: This 1936 Reichsparteitag banner is an attractive and scarce piece. It was made to commemorate the 1936 Reich Party Congress, which was called the “Rally of Freedom.” It’s a small double sided banner, that measures 19 cm x 14 cm (7.5″ x 5.5″). It’s all machine sewn, with the body of the banner made of a deluxe red fabric with an appealing sheen. Beautiful, intricately machine woven emblems are applied to both sides. One side has the crest of the city of Nuremberg, where the Nazi Party rallies were held. The crest features a nickname for the city, “Des deutschen Reiches Schatzkästlein” (The treasure chest of the German Reich). The roundel on the other side bears the official emblem of the 1936 rally, with a Nazi eagle and swastika emblem atop kneeling knights, within a wreath of green oak leaves. Both of these Bevo emblems show age toning and some slight staining, but are intact, with no holes or major damage. The banner retains nice original color throughout. The banner retains its original brass hanging bar with red twisted cord, as well as original white tassels at the upper corners. This 1936 Reichsparteitag banner is a really neat piece, that makes for a great accent to a display. It’s in excellent condition.
Historical Description: The Reichparteitag (Reich Party Congress) was the annual rally of the Nazi Party in Germany. These festivals began in 1923 and continued until 1938; the 1939 event was planned, but cancelled on short notice due to the outbreak of WWII. After the Nazis came to power in 1933, the Reichsparteitag rallies were huge events, held each year in Nuremberg at massive rally grounds created for this purpose. Hitler gave Nuremberg the official title of “Stadt der Reichsparteitage” (City of the Reich Party Congresses) in 1933. Propaganda films, such as Triumph of the Will, were filmed at these events; the events themselves had tremendous propaganda value for the Nazis. Hundreds of thousands of people attended these gatherings. Countless types of souvenir items were made to commemorate the annual events, and to celebrate Nuremberg’s title as their host. There were flags, beer steins, personal items of all descriptions and also tinnies for each event. There were also specific items made for people attending the events, from paper passes to awards for those who were victorious at competitions held during the rallies. These events were important to the Nazi state and this memorabilia is collected today for its historical value.
