Product Description: This Japanese Order Of The Sacred Treasure is an exquisite piece. These awards were extremely high quality, and this one is no exception. The award itself is gorgeous, with extremely attractive enamel and bright original colors. There is some minor enamel chipping to the lower left, and typical, even age toning to the metalwork. There is very slight wear, that suggests this was a piece that was issued and worn. The reverse of this award has a pleasant, uncleaned age patina. The hardware is intact, functional, and unrepaired, with a barrel hinge, and round wire hinge and catch, as well as 2 hooks to help secure this when worn. The rivets are nice and tight, and untouched. There are Japanese characters on the rear of the badge. This beautiful award is complete with its original deluxe case of issue. The case is made of lacquered wood, and is in nearly perfect condition, with only normal age toning to the hinge and closure hardware. The Japanese characters in gold on the lid are flawless. Inside, the case is lined in the lid with purple silk. The award rests on a purple velvet colored insert, intricately inletted to accept the badge. The purple silk and velvet retain bright original color. This rare Japanese Order Of The Sacred Treasure is visually stunning. It is in excellent condition.
Historical Description: As with the other belligerent nations in WWII, Japan issued an array of medals and awards to recognize distinguished conduct. Some medals awarded for WWII actions were traditional Imperial Japanese awards that had roots in the 1870s and were based on the British award system, while others were created during the war to acknowledge actions and proficiency as the war evolved. Originally, gallantry awards in the Japanese military were reserved for those killed in battle, but this changed during WWII, with new valor awards instituted in wartime in an attempt to raise morale. In addition to valor awards, there were badges for achievements in marksmanship, and for personnel in specific roles such as pilots, commanders and submarine crews. There were awards for soldiers who were wounded in action, as well as Red Cross awards, long service awards, and medals that commemorated participation in specific actions or campaigns. There were also awards for military veterans. All decorations issued by Imperial Japan are today widely sought-after for their historical value.
