Product Description: This Four Place Silesian Medal Bar is a great set of awards, for a man with service during and after World War One. The first award here is a nice 1914 pattern Iron Cross Second Class. This cross retains nearly all of the original black paint on its nicely detailed core, and has typical age toning on the frame. After this there is a 2nd class Friedrich-August-Kreuz, an award instituted by the Grand Duke of Oldenburg to honor those with outstanding WWI service. This cross is a nice strike, with nearly all of the original finish and great detail. In the third position is a 1913 pattern Bavarian long service award, with great original luster. The final award, and perhaps the highlight of this set, is a very fine Silesian Eagle 2nd Class, for Freikorps service after WWI. This handsome medal retains very nearly all of the original finish, and is a choice example, with a great look. All of the awards are on their correct original ribbons, which are very neatly folded and assembled to the bar. The reverse of this four place Silesian medal bar retains its original red felt backing. The brass pin and integral catch are intact and functional. This desirable medal bar displays very well, and is in a very strong excellent condition.
Historical Description: The German Military had a long tradition of issuing awards for achievements ranging from long service and participation in specific campaigns, to battlefield valor. Some types of awards were to be pinned on the uniform, while others were medals that were suspended from ribbons. On the field uniform, only the ribbons for these medals were to be worn. But for dress uniforms used for parade and walking-out purposes, soldiers wore all of their medals in the form of medal bars that would be pinned to the uniform, on the soldier’s chest. Each medal bar was individually custom made by a tailor or a manufacturer of insignia. They were not issue items, they had to be purchased. These ranged from single mounted awards, to long racks of medals indicating a distinguished career of many years, sometimes with medals from both World Wars or even earlier awards of Imperial Germany. German medal bars were also worn on dress uniforms of civil, political, and paramilitary organizations.
