Waffen SS Officers Visor

Product Description: I am pleased to offer this direct veteran acquired Waffen SS Officers Visor. This is an untouched time capsule, all-original and just as it was when it came back from WWII. I obtained this cap in 2002 from a veteran of the 101st Airborne Division. I was 19 years old at that time; unfortunately, I didn’t have the sense to write down the veteran’s name. He lived in Arbutus, Maryland. He told me that while his unit was staying in Berchtesgaden, he found this cap in a shack together with a uniform and a pistol with belt. His buddy took the uniform, and he took this cap and the other items. I also purchased a fork from this same veteran that he picked up at the “Hotel Post, Berchtesgaden.” The exterior of this gorgeous cap is made of fine, gray-green trikot, with a ribbed weave. The cap band is beautiful black velvet. The condition of the exterior is wonderful, with some small moth nips and a couple light marks on the rear top area. The officer style chin cord is intact, and the visor retains its original finish, with only very light age toning. The insignia on this cap are a late war, zinc style. These are original to the cap with no sign of ever having been removed. Both the SS eagle and Totenkopf skull emblems retain full original detail and partial original finish. The piping on this cap is white, as was used by officers of all SS branches for the majority of the war. The inside of this Waffen SS officers visor is lined with yellow artificial silk. It is completely unmarked, with the exception of the size “56” on the paper label inside the sweatshield. The fragile celluloid sweatshield remains completely intact, as does the leather sweatband, which shows only light wear. This cap came out of the woodwork almost two decades ago and is now being offered on the market for the first time. It is a choice piece that could be the highlight of an advanced collection.

Historical Description: The visor cap (Schirmmütze) was an important part of the headgear worn by German uniformed military, civil, paramilitary and political organizations during the Third Reich. This was the standard cloth headgear worn as a part of the service uniform. Visor caps were worn outdoors, as well as indoors, and were often required to be worn by all personnel on duty. Visor caps were made in versions specific to each organization and were often further differentiated through the use of insignia, colored piping, or style of chin cord, to indicate rank, role or branch. The insignia used on these caps ranged from simple stamped metal emblems, to elaborate hand embroidery. Visor caps were issued to enlisted soldiers and NCOs in the military and in some other organizations. Officers had to purchase their own hats, and lower ranks could choose to purchase caps that were of a higher quality than the rather basic, issue examples. The private purchase caps were generally made in very high quality, with fine materials. A wide variety of fabrics were used, from Trikot and doeskin, to heavy wool, or even lightweight white fabric for summer wear. In the military, issue of these caps was generally suspended shortly after the outbreak of the war, but they continued to be worn by some troops until the end of the war.
