Single Panzer Jäger Oberleutnant Board

Product Description: This single Panzer Jäger Oberleutnant Board is a salty, been-there piece with a definite “field” look. It’s a sew-in board that was obviously worn on a tunic. The board is made of matte silver braid, and has gold finished “P 36” cyphers indicating the wearer was a member of Panzerabwehr-Abteilung 36, part of the 36. Infanterie-Division (later 36. Grenadier-Division, then 36. Volksgrenadier-Division). The cyphers retain most of the original finish, with wear that matches the board. Some of the original field-gray stitching that affixed this to a tunic is still present, and there is obvious wear from the button that once went through the single button hole. The underside of the board is made of pink Panzer wool, which has heavy moth damage that exposes the tan cardboard internal stiffener. There is a single zinc based rank pip, for the rank of Oberleutnant (first lieutenant), which retains most of its original gold finish. This field-worn single Panzer Jäger Oberleutnant Board is a very evocative piece, that shows its age. The condition is very good.

Historical Description: The German military as well as civil, political and paramilitary organizations traditionally used shoulder straps and shoulder boards as uniform insignia, to denote the rank or function of the wearer. After the Nazi rise to power in 1933, there was a tremendous increase in the number of groups and organizations in Germany wearing officially sanctioned uniforms, and most of these organizations used shoulder straps and shoulder boards as a component of their regalia. The exact color of piping utilized, the material color, the type of braid or Tresse that was used, and the number or location of devices and pips present, allow shoulder boards to be tracked to the exact organization that issued them, and often yield even further detail such as the wearer’s rank and even his specific military unit. Normally worn in pairs, the boards were in some cases plain, and in other cases adorned with detailed embroidery or metal emblems. Some shoulder boards were made in the millions, others were specific to a single individual.
