Product Description:  German Mercator K55K Black Cat Folding Knife, offered here in excellent overall condition for its age, displaying honest wear consistent with age and prolonged use. The blade exhibits minor edge chipping along with surface wear and corrosion, all of which contribute to the knife’s period character rather than detract from its integrity.

The presence of the DRGM marking along the spine confirms manufacture prior to 1952, supporting the possibility of the knife having been retained as a Second World War–era veteran souvenir. Despite visible corrosion and age-related wear, all components remain intact, with the blade opening and locking smoothly and functioning as intended. A well-preserved and historically evocative example of the German Mercator K55K Black Cat Folding Knife, desirable to collectors of German edged weapons and utilitarian knives.

Historical Description:  The German Mercator K55K Black Cat Folding Knife traces its origins to late 19th-century Solingen, Germany, a city long renowned for blade production. The Mercator was designed as a simple, durable folding knife intended for everyday utility. Its slim steel handle, straightforward lockback mechanism, and carbon steel blade reflected an emphasis on practicality and mass production rather than ornamentation. The stamped black cat emblem—introduced as a trademark—became a distinctive identifier and later lent the knife its popular nickname, the “Black Cat.”

During the early to mid-20th century, the Mercator K55K gained wide recognition, particularly among German soldiers in both World Wars, who valued it as a privately purchased, non-regulation utility knife. Though not an officially issued military weapon, it was commonly carried for routine tasks due to its reliability and compact form. After wartime disruptions, production eventually resumed, and the design remained largely unchanged, contributing to its reputation as a timeless classic. Today, the Mercator K55K Black Cat is regarded as an iconic example of German industrial design, appreciated by collectors and historians for its longevity, simplicity, and strong association with everyday life in Germany across generations.
