Product Description: This Waffen-SS Panzer Bevo M43 Unissued Cap Insignia is a textbook original unissued piece. This pattern of insignia was intended for wear on the black M43 field caps worn by tank crew members in the Waffen-SS. It features an SS eagle and swastika emblem over a Totenkopf, in silver-gray thread on a black trapezoidal background. It’s Bevo, machine woven, on a backing of typical thin black rayon. The reverse of this SS M43 Panzer Trapezoid shows typical details of the machine weaving. This is an uncut, unissued piece, with no stitch holes or signs of use. The ends do show some loose threads from age. The condition of this desirable SS Panzer cap emblem rates as excellent +.

Historical Description: The German Armed Forces (Wehrmacht), as formed in 1935, and as they existed until the end of World War 2, consisted of the Army (Heer), the Air Force (Luftwaffe) and the Navy (Kriegsmarine). The Waffen-SS fell under the command of the Wehrmacht during the war. Each of these branches of service had a unique eagle design that was worn on both the formal dress and parade uniforms, and the field uniforms, of the members of that branch. These eagles were worn on soft headgear, including service and field caps, as well as on the uniform jacket. In the Heer, the Luftwaffe, and the Kriegsmarine, this eagle was worn on the chest of the tunic; collectors have termed these “breast eagles.” The Heer and the Luftwaffe generally used the same eagle style, though variations in color of the eagle or the backing distinguish between the two. The Luftwaffe used their own flying eagle emblem. The Waffen-SS sleeve eagle (and cap eagle) had wings that came to a distinctive tapered point. The cap, breast and sleeve eagles used by the various military branches were manufactured in many variations. There were machine-woven and machine embroidered versions, usually used by officers and NCOs. Hand-embroidered bullion wire eagles were typically for officers. There were metal eagles, for caps, or for uniforms that were intended to have detachable insignia. There were even eagles embroidered on camouflage fabric, intended for use on special field uniforms. There were also eagles in specific colors for use on tropical uniforms. Some of these eagles were mass-produced and are still common today. Others were, and are, very rare.

Product Description: A fine and highly desirable example of an original Police SS Flatwire Cap Insignia, intended for wear on the overseas-style field cap commonly referred to by NCO or Officers as the “Schiffchen,” and also encountered on the M43 field cap.

This attractive insignia is of classic BeVo machine-woven construction, featuring the distinctive German Polizei wreathed eagle clutching a swastika, executed in sharp black and silver flatewire on a thin black rayon backing. The quality of the weaving is immediately apparent, with crisp definition throughout the eagle, wreath, and surrounding details, characteristic of period BeVo production.

Notably, this example has been cut around to be used on a cap. As a result, it survives in near mint condition, showing only the most minimal age toning and very light traces of handling acquired over time.

The reverse clearly displays the textbook BeVo machine-woven pattern, further confirming its period construction.

Unissued examples such as this are increasingly difficult to locate today. Whether displayed independently or preserved as part of a broader Third Reich insignia collection, this Police SS Flatwire Cap Insignia represents an excellent and highly collectible period artifact.

Product Description: This listing consists of one of the following eagles cut from the original unissued roll.

A fine and highly desirable example of an original SS Police BeVo cap eagle insignia, intended for wear on the overseas-style field cap commonly referred to by soldiers as the “Schiffchen,” and also encountered on the M43 field cap.

This attractive insignia is of classic BeVo machine-woven construction, featuring the distinctive German Polizei wreathed eagle clutching a swastika, executed in sharp black and cream-colored thread on a thin black rayon backing. The quality of the weaving is immediately apparent, with crisp definition throughout the eagle, wreath, and surrounding details, characteristic of period BeVo production.

As manufactured, these insignia were designed to be folded and sewn to the cap in a trapezoidal configuration to conform to the front of the field cap. Notably, this example has never been folded or applied, remaining exactly as originally produced. As a result, it survives in near mint condition, showing only the most minimal age toning and very light traces of handling acquired over time.
The reverse clearly displays the textbook BeVo machine-woven pattern, further confirming its period construction.

Unissued examples such as this are increasingly difficult to locate today. Whether displayed independently or preserved as part of a broader Third Reich insignia collection, this SS Police BeVo cap eagle represents an excellent and highly collectible period artifact.

Product Description: This SS M43 Panzer Trapezoid is a textbook original piece. The reverse of this SS M43 Panzer Trapezoid shows typical details of the machine weaving, as well as some small spots of adhesive residue from having been mounted in a scrapbook long ago. This is an unissued piece, with no stitch holes or any traces of wear. There are a few minor wrinkles, but no stains or holes. The condition of this desirable SS Panzer cap emblem rates as excellent.

Historical Description: The SS was founded as a paramilitary branch of the Nazi Party in 1925. Beginning in 1927, the SS began to wear a German national eagle and swastika emblem on their headgear. The SS were the first to adopt this practice, but the SA and other Nazi organizations soon began to use the same pinned-on metal cap eagle, which became known as a “political” type cap eagle as it was different from those used by the various military branches. Beneath this eagle, instead of a wreathed national colors cockade, the early SS wore a jawless skull emblem, sometimes called a “Danziger” skull, which was based on a traditional “Totenkopf” death’s-head emblem that had been used in the Prussian military since the time of Frederick the Great. This jawless skull is referred to by collectors as the first pattern SS skull. On October 6, 1934, the SS introduced a new pattern of cap skull that was unlike the traditional design that had previously been adopted. This second pattern SS skull was used until the end of WWII and is the iconic Totenkopf widely associated with the SS today. It was initially worn in conjunction with the political style cap eagle, but in February 1936 the SS introduced a new type of cap eagle to differentiate from other political organizations. This eagle had longer wings than the early political type, and was the pattern worn by the SS together with the second pattern Totenkopf, until 1945. Early SS cap insignia was made from a variety of materials including aluminum, which was left bare, and Tombak, a brass alloy, which was treated with a silver finish. Some examples were made of a composite material called CupAl, which is made by coating aluminum with copper sheet using a special mechanical process. Later, during the later years of WWII, SS cap insignia was generally made of zinc that was treated with a silver wash. As with all SS regalia, SS cap insignia is very collectible today.
